I have learned to listen and live with my hands open to motherhood.

My three daughters are close in age, and with all three girls in college at once, they have stories and ideas on what makes an awesome summer.

An empty nest since last August shifted as my baby eagles are all home for the summer. It’s noisy and bustling again. Lots of laundry and laughter.

They all have stories about the semester of classes, and both challenging and encouraging experiences— which helps them see the value in being aware, patient, and take the initiative.

It’s been a wonderful and full first month of them being home. So many hugs and smooches.

And over the years, I have learned to listen and live with my hands open to what might be, to how I can connect with my daughters, great chats on car rides to and from work (and glad my eldest has a car!), from early mornings or closing late shifts.

I savor moments we connect over a meal at the kitchen table, cuddling pup, swimming at our neighborhood pool, or a late dinner cooking at 9:00pm. Maybe it’s watching a movie, playing cards, or competing at Ticket to Ride. Sunday lunches with my mom, or grocery shopping and meal planning also offer time together.

Being home and present with my kids is literally my dream-come-true and it’s my heart’s delight.

Am I open to learning new ideas and shifts in my own routines? All three have good insights about running the home more efficiently or being assertive about what they want or need.

I am grateful we have raised young adults who are good citizens, love deeply, and seek to be light and hope in our world.
