Every new school year provides opportunities and changes! This school year will be an interesting and monumental shift for me, with all 3 daughters graduated and in college soon.
Today we welcomed 9th grade and transfer students. I wore my Dodgers shirt and as students rotated to classes this afternoon, I shared my transfer student story.
When my family moved from Temple City, CA to Colorado Springs and I started my junior year at Air Academy HS, connections in softball, soccer, writing for Yearbook. and serving as a building buddy for ESE helped me feel welcome.
I encourage students to find a place to connect, whether marching band, theatre, art programs, or computer science.
I’m taking my own advice and searching for a growth mindset.
Our Creative Writing 1 & 2 program is not being offered this year, so I shifted to other classes. I am disappointed, but a teacher friend encouraged me to weave creative writing into every class, while another colleague gave me a book to use in my writing curriculum.
Two of my kind, supportive work buddies moved downstairs to other classrooms. I will miss them but we’ll stay pals.
One of my work besties helped me move my classroom tables into an awesome setup!
I want to model what I ask of my students — openness, flexibility, and mindfulness, embracing new opportunities.
This year I will teach Freshman Success (required for all students to learn strategies and skills for ownership and self-advocacy), Freshman Lit & Comp, and Sophomore Lang & Lit.
I realize a lot here in this space and time as the exhaustion of today sets in.
I’m lucky to have my own classroom and my own parking spot.
My girls found a gorgeous tulip paper poster at Inkwell in Estes Park this weekend and my library friends laminated it.
This fall, I am volunteering with the men’s soccer program in a support staff role. We have some generous gate sponsors for boys soccer in the fall (and girls soccer in the spring) to cover the ticket costs, so all attend for free.
So many reasons to be grateful. A rising tide lifts all boats.
Read books and be kind!! Happy school year!
