On the Friday before Labor Day in 1994, when literature teacher Faith impulsively flies to Italy to chase after her destiny, I get it. She doesn’t have any classes to teach until Wednesday!
I mean, the inciting incident was when Damon Bradley called on the phone — and then she had to leave (in her wedding dress, ironically), to hail a cab to the airport to see if there was any “magic or chemistry” in meeting him. All these star-crossed promises await!
Oh, the rising action of when Faith misses the flight! And then she and Bonnie Hunt/Kate fly to Italy together.
But then — Faith met Peter Wright (aka Mr. Right?) in Rome, and there was a complication: would she abandon her carefully-crafted life plans, or gently open her heart to the charisma and whimsy of unexpected love?
“Only You” is one of those films which still feels timeless 32 years later with the landscape and music as a love letter to Italy: Venice, Tuscany, Rome, the Amalfi coast, and Positano.
And every age I watch the film, I change who I most relate to — and who I’m hoping will finally have an epiphany to live with kindness and a light heart.
