Recently, one of my teen daughters had a big dental procedure and was scared for it all week. And when she learned the appointment meant she’d miss a few classes, she was further disappointed (I love her heart for school!). Dear girl!

We prayed about it this whole week and talked about some coping strategies when her anxiety rises.

In reminding her that we’ve faced this before, and in remembering how she made it through past trials and difficulties, and that she’s not alone, my girl felt loved, supported, and ready. She even asked her dentist to explain each step of the process and her dentist was kind and patient. It really helped her relax for the procedure.

Later, when my daughter recovered and was napping in her bed at home, I returned to teach my afternoon classes, and my mom took care of her, spending time with her and taking her out for a late lunch (including a cookie milkshake!).

I won’t always be there for some of my daughter’s most difficult days; sometimes we have to navigate these things alone. But in that moment, she felt loved and learned to bravely face those times with healthier, honest emotions, and the prayers of family members to support her.
